Town of West Stockbridge HVAC Replacement
Stockbridge, MA
Overview
The 45,700 sf Office Building for the Town of Stockbridge was renovated back in 2006. The building houses town offices, town police department, and community and rental spaces.
The HVAC system installed as part of the renovations was comprised of water source heat pumps connected to an open ground-water circulation loop consisting of three open water wells. From early on, the replacement HVAC system was plagued by numerous failures ranging from heat pumps clogged with sediment, low system flows and pipe freeze-ups.
In 2013, EDM conducted a study to evaluate current operating conditions and analyzed options for the replacement of the existing HVAC system in the Town office building. In their report, EDM recommended removing the open water wells and replacing them with a conventional closed loop piping system fed by a cooling tower and boiler to work with the existing water-source heat pumps. Subsequently, EDM designed the replacement system as recommended. The designed solution significantly increased the reliability of the HVAC system, increased energy efficiency and reduced operating costs.
